Labor dep't, university to hold biggest job fair

THE Department of Labor and Employment, in partnership with the University of Mindanao, through its Public Employment Service Office, will spearhead a two-day job fair in Davao City dubbed "Job Expo '05" with passport processing, SSS and PhilHealth Registration on March 2 to 3 at UM Main Gym.

It is going to be the biggest job fair in Davao City since employers who will be participating for the event are from Davao City, Cebu, Cavite and Manila.

The Department of Foreign Affairs will also join the activity for the passport processing, while the Social Security System and the PhilHealth will also be part of fair for the SSS and PhilHealth registration.

Series of preparations are being done to ensure the smooth and orderly job fair comes March.

A Pre-Employment Seminar for Local Applicants (Pesla) to all UM Alumni and graduating students were conducted by Dr. Carmencita E. Vidamo, AVP for Institutional Affairs of UM and Mr. Reynaldo Castro, director for external relations and the UM Peso manager in Davao City, Tagum City and Digos City.

There are more than 1,500 pre-registered applicants who had undergone the Pesla and are expected participants for the job expo.

There are more than 55 companies who confirmed to join the job expo, including Asia Brewery in Manila, San Miguel Corporation, Jollibee, SM, Gaisano Mall, NCCC, NEC Electronics, Anflo Corporation, Metrobank, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and many others.

There are 1,000 openings and opportunities for the job expo.

A job fair is a form of employment facilitation program of the Department of Labor and Employment and the Public Employment Service Office (Peso), which aims to establish a one-stop-shop for job seekers and employers for job matching purposes.

Mrs. Ofelia B. Domingo, chief of the Employment and Promotions Division of Dole has acknowledged the active participation of the academe in this undertaking.

Early this year, Holy Cross of Davao College has initiated another job fair with more than 50 participating employers all over Mindanao.

Domingo added that academe's participating employers all over Mindanao.

She said that academe's participation in activities like this strengthened the academe-industry partnership, and for the academe to understand the different manpower needs of the industry.
